Yoga, Pilates or aerial yoga on Koh Samui — what is the difference?
If you searched for yoga or Pilates on Koh Samui and landed here, a quick honesty note first: AirGym Family teaches aerial yoga. We do not run mat yoga or Pilates classes. The three share a name, some methods and some results — but they are different disciplines, and it helps to know the difference before you choose.
Yoga
Mat-based. A sequence of postures held or flowed through, tied to the breath. It builds flexibility, balance and a calmer nervous system; strength comes mainly from holding your own bodyweight in shapes. The floor is your only apparatus, so what you can do is bounded by what your body can support on its own.
Pilates
Also mat-based (or on a reformer), but built around precise, controlled movement rather than held poses. The focus is the deep core, alignment and control through small ranges. It is often the first thing a physiotherapist recommends after an injury because the load is low and the control is high.
Aerial yoga
Yoga postures taken into a fabric hammock hung from the ceiling. The fabric takes part of your weight, which changes everything: you can invert safely, decompress the spine, and reach stretches that are hard to get on the floor. At the same time the hammock is unstable, so your core and grip work harder than they would on a mat. It is closer to aerial arts than to a yoga studio — which is why we teach it here.
Where they overlap
- Breath-led movement and body awareness.
- Flexibility — all three lengthen and open the body.
- Core strength — Pilates most directly, aerial yoga through instability, yoga through holds.
- A calmer head afterwards. That part is real in all three.
Where they do not
- Apparatus. Yoga and Pilates: the mat. Aerial yoga: a hammock — you learn to trust and use it.
- Load. Pilates is the gentlest and most rehab-friendly. Aerial yoga asks more of your grip and shoulders.
- Inversions. Going upside down is a small, advanced part of mat yoga and not part of Pilates. In aerial yoga it is routine — and supported.
- The feeling. Yoga is grounded; Pilates is precise; aerial yoga is a little bit of flying. People usually know within one class which one is theirs.
Which one for you?
If you want a quiet, floor-based practice, or you are coming back from an injury — look for a yoga or Pilates teacher; that is not what we do, and we would rather say so than sell you the wrong thing. If the idea of hanging in a hammock, decompressing your back and turning stretches into something closer to play sounds like you — that is aerial yoga, and it is taught at AirGym Family on Koh Samui by coaches who also teach the rest of our aerial arts. No experience needed; the first class is about getting comfortable in the fabric.
And if flexibility is the actual goal behind the search, our stretching and flexibility classes go at it directly.
